Wilfred Chivell started his boat based whale watching company Dyer Island Cruises in 2000. Building on the success of this company he purchased Marine Dynamics Tours, an existing shark cage diving company in 2005. He has taken the industry to a new level with his five star service offering and his investment into research, conservation and education. Responsible Tourism is one of Wilfred’s driving motivators and that which he instils in all around him.
His company slogan is "Your Choice Makes a Difference". Wilfred established the Dyer Island Conservation Trust in 2006 for the protection of the endangered African penguin for which he had always had a soft spot. The Trust has developed into so much more including support towards great white shark research notably the first population study of the species for Gansbaai.
The Trust is also very involved in marine pollution efforts with a unique fishing line bin project and works with many school groups on marine education and beach clean ups. The companies actively fundraise every day towards the conservation efforts and Wilfred has supported three Master’s students through their studies and continues to support a PhD student as well as visiting scientists.
"It is important to protect that on which we rely for a living." Marine Dynamics and Dyer Island Cruises have been Fair Trade Certified since 2008 and Marine Dynamics has a Level 1 BEE rating. Wilfred recently opened the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary in Gansbaai for the rehabilitation of seabirds. The companies have won various awards - the most recent and notable is that Marine Dynamics won the African Responsible Tourism Award – Best for Wildlife Conservation.
